What is anorexia?

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by a persistent restriction of food intake and an intense fear of weight gain. Common anorexia symptoms and signs of anorexia include:
  • Restrictive eating or significant caloric limitation
  • Intense fear of weight gain or becoming ‘bigger’
  • Distorted body image or dissatisfaction with weight/shape
  • Compensatory behaviors such as overexercise or purging (in some subtypes)
  • Low body weight or rapid weight decline—even at higher BMIs (Atypical AN)

Many individuals with anorexia do not appear visibly underweight. Symptoms are often hidden or minimized, which is why early anorexia therapy and support are critical.

What causes anorexia?

While both are eating disorders, anorexia vs bulimia differ in key ways. Anorexia is primarily marked by restriction and fear of weight gain, whereas bulimia typically involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging. Both require specialized treatment, but care approaches differ based on medical and psychological risk.

There is no single answer to what causes anorexia. It often develops from a combination of factors, including:
  • Genetic vulnerability
  • Perfectionism or high achievement orientation
  • Anxiety, OCD traits, or emotional sensitivity
  • Dieting or weight-related comments
  • Trauma or chronic stress

Effective anorexia treatment addresses both the physical and psychological contributors to the disorder.

Medical + psychological risks

Anorexia carries significant medical risk, including:
  • Bradycardia (low heart rate)
  • Low blood pressure or dizziness
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Digestive issues and constipation
  • Hormonal suppression or amenorrhea
  • Cognitive fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety, depression, or obsessive thoughts

Without proper anorexia therapy, these risks can become life-threatening.

When outpatient treatment is appropriate

Outpatient anorexia treatment may be suitable for individuals who:

  • Are medically stable enough to remain at home
  • Can attend weekly therapy and nutrition sessions
  • Are willing to participate in structured nutritional rehabilitation
  • Are not experiencing acute medical instability requiring hospitalization

If you’re unsure, our team can help determine the appropriate level of care.
