What is bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia is characterized by recurring cycles of:
  • Binge eating episodes (feeling out of control with food)
  • Compensatory behaviours such as purging, restriction, overexercise, or laxative use
  • Intense shame or attempts to “cancel out” binges
  • Secretive behaviours related to food, eating, or body image

These bulimia symptoms and signs of bulimia often occur in individuals who maintain a “normal” weight, making the disorder less visible but no less medically serious.

What causes bulimia?

While both are eating disorders, bulimia vs anorexia differ in presentation and risk patterns. Bulimia involves cycles of bingeing and compensatory behaviours, whereas anorexia is primarily characterized by restriction and fear of weight gain. Both require specialized treatment, but clinical approaches vary based on medical stability and behaviour patterns.

There is no single explanation for what causes bulimia. It often develops due to a combination of:
  • Chronic dieting or food restriction
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Perfectionism or impulsivity traits
  • Trauma or high stress
  • Anxiety, depression, or low self-worth

Effective bulimia treatment focuses on addressing both behavioural patterns and the underlying emotional drivers.

Bulimia vs Anorexia

Medical + physiological risks

Without proper bulimia therapy, these risks can escalate quickly.
Bulimia carries significant health risks, including:
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Cardiac complications
  • Gastrointestinal issues (bloating, delayed gastric emptying, constipation)
  • Dental erosion from purging
  • Hormonal disruption
  • Fatigue and blood sugar dysregulation
  • Anxiety, depression, and impulsivity

When outpatient bulimia treatment is appropriate

Outpatient bulimia treatment may be appropriate for individuals who:

  • Are medically stable
  • Can participate in weekly therapy and nutrition sessions
  • Are motivated to reduce binge–purge behaviours
  • Are not experiencing acute medical instability

Our team of bulimia experts can help determine if outpatient care is the right starting point.

How we treat bulimia at EatWell Health Centre

Bulimia treatment focuses on interrupting the binge–purge cycle, stabilizing eating patterns, and supporting emotional regulation.

Eating Disorder–Specialized Therapy

Clients work with a bulimia therapist trained in evidence-based approaches, including:
  • CBT-E
  • DBT-informed therapy
  • Emotion regulation skills
  • Exposure-based approaches
  • Body image work

Therapy helps clients understand the triggers, beliefs, and emotional patterns that drive bingeing and purging, and directly addresses questions like how can I stop binging and how to stop purging.

Eating Disorder–Focused Nutrition Therapy

Our Registered Dietitians support bulimia recovery by helping clients:
  • Restore structured eating patterns
  • Stabilize blood sugar to reduce binge urges
  • Understand the biological drivers of bingeing
  • Rebuild trust with food
  • Stop restriction that perpetuates the binge–purge cycle

Integrated Weekly Care

Most clients attend:
  • 1 therapy session per week with a bulimia therapist
  • 1 nutrition session per week

This coordinated approach ensures consistent progress across both psychological and physical health.

Understanding the binge-purge cycle

Bulimia is often maintained by a repeating pattern of restriction → binge → compensation → shame → restriction. Bulimia treatment helps disrupt this cycle through structured eating, emotion regulation skills, and cognitive restructuring.

What bulimia recovery looks like

With treatment, bulimia recovery often includes:
  • Reduced binge urges and episodes
  • Elimination of purging behaviours
  • Improved digestive comfort
  • Less shame around eating
  • Stronger emotional regulation
  • Improved body trust and body image

Recovery is possible and support will make a meaningful difference.
